After 6 years of being a top Etsy seller, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned to having a successful business on Etsy. If I can do it, you can do it! Start your small business journey today with these 5 steps.
Starting an Etsy shop can sound overwhelming. From someone that has been where you are, try to take it one step at time. I have compiled a checklist of 5 steps, so that you can open a legitimate Etsy shop in a matter of days. Good luck, friend! I know you can do it.
This blog post is all about How to Start a Legitimate Etsy Shop in 5 Steps
1. Choose your business name
Choose your Etsy shop name. You can check out my blog post on this, but don’t get hung up on this detail. The easiest way to decide is: use your name. This way, if you decide to change your niche, later on, you won’t have to change your business name as well.
2. Register your business with the Secretary of State
Go to your secretary of state website and file as an official business. It sounds tough, but it takes about 10 minutes. You have the options of DBA (doing business as), or LLC (limited liability corporation). There is no right or wrong choice, choose what is best for you.
3. File for an EIN
You will need this to file taxes, open a business account, and (maybe eventually) hire employees. Go to www.IRS.com to file.
4. Open a separate checking account
Go to your local bank and open a business account (you will need your EIN for this). Keep your business and personal accounts separate. This way, you won’t have to worry about your personal and business expenses co-mingling and will make bookkeeping easier.
5. Set up your Etsy shop
Get 40 free Etsy listings here, plug in your new business name and EIN. You did it! Woo hoo!
Download the Etsy Application for your phone.
6. Gather your resources

Other things to consider:
Secure social media handles
No, you probably won’t need them all right away. But, secure the name for future use.
Create a website and email list
I recommend using wix.com This is the host I started with. It’s user-friendly and FREE! Set up a basic launch page with your Etsy shop link and start collecting email addresses, in return for a small discount on your products. You may not see a need for it today or in a week, but in a year or two, you will be thanking yourself for this extra step.
There is so much to get wrapped up in, and so many tasks that take time and energy from the real goal: starting your business and making money. Try to focus on one goal at time.
